Meta Sells You the Tap. Nobody Sells You the Answer.

A product catalog opening inside a WhatsApp chat after someone taps an ad

If you have a WhatsApp Business number, Meta has probably emailed you by now. Put your catalog on WhatsApp. Run ads that click straight into a chat. Let people discover your products across Instagram and Facebook and buy without ever filling in a form.

All of it is true. Ads that click to WhatsApp really do work, and the catalog really does make products easy to browse. But the email stops one step short of the part that decides whether any of it makes you money.

One tap moves someone from a feed ad into an open chat

What Meta is actually offering

Strip away the marketing and there are two pieces.

The first is the catalog: your products, sitting inside WhatsApp, browsable in the chat itself. No redirect to a shop, no new login, no cart that forgets what was in it.

The second is the ad that clicks to WhatsApp. Instead of sending someone to a landing page, the ad opens a conversation. One tap, and a stranger scrolling Instagram at midnight is suddenly a message in your inbox.

That combination is genuinely strong, and it is strong for an unglamorous reason: it removes work. A landing page asks someone to read, decide, scroll, type their details and trust that a reply comes. A chat asks them to say hi.

Why one tap beats a landing page

  • No form to fill in, so people who would have bounced at field three actually reach you.
  • An app they already trust, so there is nothing new to learn at the exact moment they are deciding.
  • Messages that get read: WhatsApp sees roughly 98% open rates against about 20% for email, so your follow-up is not shouting into a void.
  • Questions answered while intent is hot, instead of a "we will get back to you" that arrives two days late.
  • The thread stays, so the next conversation starts where the last one ended rather than from scratch.

The part the email leaves out

Here is the scene the ad creates. It is 22:47 on a Sunday. Someone taps your ad, lands in your chat, looks at the catalog and types: "Do you have this in 42, and how fast could it ship?"

The catalog cannot answer that. A catalog shows what you sell. It does not know your stock, your delivery times, or whether this particular customer qualifies for the offer. Only a person can answer, and on Sunday night there is no person.

Meanwhile the meter is running. You paid for that tap whether or not anyone replies. An unanswered chat is not a neutral outcome, it is bought intent going cold, and the buyer is already back in the feed looking at your competitor.

Better ads will not fix a slow inbox. They will fill it faster and make the gap more expensive.

This is the honest trade-off, and it is why some businesses run click-to-WhatsApp campaigns brilliantly and others quietly turn them off after a month. The ad is the easy part. Meta has made it almost frictionless. Answering every conversation within a minute, at any hour, in whatever volume the campaign produces, is the hard part, and nobody is selling you that in an email.

What answering actually has to do

Being fast is not enough on its own. To turn a tap into revenue, the thing that answers has to:

  • Reply in under a minute, day or night, because the value of an answer drops sharply once the person has moved on.
  • Answer real product questions, not just send a greeting. Sizes, availability, price, delivery. The questions the catalog raises but cannot resolve.
  • Qualify while it talks, so you learn budget, timing and fit inside the conversation instead of in a follow-up call.
  • Know when to stop, and hand the genuinely tricky cases to a human with the full thread visible, so nobody has to ask the customer to repeat themselves.
  • Keep going after the first reply, because most sales need a nudge two days later, not just a quick hello.

That is a lot to ask of a team that also has a day job. It is exactly what an AI agent is for.

One more thing worth knowing

When a sale happens inside WhatsApp, your Meta Pixel cannot see it. The conversion is invisible to the algorithm, so your campaigns get optimised against clicks instead of revenue and your reporting quietly understates what the channel is worth. That is a fixable problem, and we wrote about it separately in why your Pixel misses WhatsApp conversions.

How alkaio fits

alkaio is the answering half. You run the ads and keep the catalog; alkaio makes sure nothing that taps it gets left waiting:

  • Every click-to-WhatsApp conversation answered in seconds, at 3am and on bank holidays
  • An AI agent that qualifies and books while it talks, then hands over cleanly when a human is genuinely needed
  • Follow-ups that keep running so a lead who went quiet on Monday still hears from you on Wednesday
  • Every conversation in one dashboard, with real conversions fed back to Meta so your ads optimise against sales

Meta will happily send you the traffic. What you do in the two minutes after the tap is the whole business.

Send a message and watch the agent qualify you in real time, the same way it would treat a lead from your ad.
